The history behind Valentines Day

February 14th is a day when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts, also known as Valentines Day. The holiday of Valentine’s day started in 496, the Romans had a celebration called Lupercalia and mid February to make it official that it was spring .  One of the activities was the boys picked girls names from a container, they would start a relationship and sometimes they’d get married.

Religious institutions chose to make the event a Christian celebration in order to remember St. Valentine. Slowly St Valentine’s name started to be used by people to show how they feel about each other. And that’s why we celebrate Valentine’s day today.
