Trojan journalism students capture national awards in Washington DC

Editors Sean Bessette, Lilly McGee, Jackson Conner and Alan Martinez traveled with chaperones Anna Marshall and adviser Thomas J. Kaup traveled to Washington DC on Wednesday, November 20 to attend the national high school journalism competition sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and the National Scholastic Press Association.

The six Trojans traveled on a red eye flight on Wednesday night to arrive in DC early on Thursday morning, November 21.  While in DC the four students were selected to compete in national writing, design, and photography competition.  There were 2,126 contestants in the competition.  Of these contestants, there were 864 selected as winners: 144 Superiors, 252 Excellents, and 468 Honorable Mentions.

Jackson Conner proved his prowess in writing by capturing an Excellent award in Sports Writing.

Alan Martinez captured an Honorable Mention in Portrait Photography. for his portrait of an AHS student.

All of the four students were the only contestants from the Auburn School District.

“It is an  honor to work and travel with such outstanding young men and women,” said Adviser Thomas J. Kaup.
